CREATIVE HEROES #9 Mrs Susan Legg

Coming from a small country to the United States was a eye opener when you think about it. What I mean by that, is that I remember as a child I always want to play with paper did not know that would be in that field or job I would get in.
Growing up back in Belize we used to make stencil so we could print on our shirts we did not know it by its professional name screen printing. If we did not want to do it our self we would take it to the government printers and they would do it. Fast foreword to the the year 1983.
1983 I came back to New york, and I start working with my father he was working at this envelope company in Brooklyn. This is the first time that I am working with inks and these big machine that can put a hurt on you.
Everything that used to come over my work station I used to read, for some reason I am always looking for mistakes or how good it was done.
There was a family that used to work there, there name is the Legg. Bob he was in charge of the printing, Jimmy was a printer and his wife Susan was in charge of the dark room. Remember this is 1983 technology was nowhere its at now.
I met Susan Legg a month or two after I was hired because, I wanted to see who do what and to learn the job from the bottom to the top and to meet my fellow co-worker. Susan had her own corner on the work floor to do her thing, nobody disturb her once she is in there. She had her own phone if you need to speak to her.
The thing that got me interested into her job was the logo for Readers Digest Magazine. The logo is of a horse with wings Pegasus. If you look at the logo for Readers Digest Magazine its at time is the size of a dime and this was before the world ever know about photo shop. When you walk past her work place you could see her with the magnifying glass looking like a character from the X-Man comic book.
Once you finish using the rubber plate or mold in printing its no good so you got to make another one. In this envelope company she was in charge of all the rubber plates for three shifts, she got to be on her game because every job got a deadline that we got to meet. This woman never said I am tired or I am not coming in, if she was not coming in she try to finish the logos for all the jobs before she leaves. When she goes on vacation her husband had to do it and there is a lot of waste with him so everybody glad when she is there. Even her husband who was her boss enjoy it when she is around because his job get easier.
When you watch somebody do a job on a logo using blades and exact-o knife you cannot knock her skills. I am glad to have met her, because I became more interested in logos and designs.
I enjoy looking at logos on envelopes and the prints to see if there are mistakes or if the ink splatter and all because of her. One thing about logos it got to be able to stand out and not over shadow whatever its prints on. 'Logo is your identity always remember that' is what she used to say when you ask her question why she is taking her time.
I will never forget her and her family and her advice to me she is my CREATIVE HERO.

COLLEGE LIFE #8

Well my first semester is over in a couple of weeks, and it was a wild ride. This school thing is fun it got it's up and down, there are days that I question myself and other days I enjoyed it. I find school fun and hard working since I got a family, you see some of the professor do not get it that some of us got family and looking for work or have a job but its all good.
I find TCI a wonderful place but like everything it could be better, I enjoy my professors very much. Some of the professor are well liked and some are way out there but that is life we all cannot be strawberry some of us got to be vanilla. As student we need to bring ourselves to school and when I say OURSELVES I mean not just show up, I mean be there for the good bad and the part that we do not like.
School as I remember it was fun and TCI is right up there. The computers,books and everything is top of the line, the professors know what they talk about so BIG UP to them.
My classmates are fun and to listen to there dream and inspiration blow me away. I use the computer lab and to see what my fellow students are working on at times blow me away. The young gentleman that runs the computer lab is GREAT he can answer any question you might have and can help you understand what you learn earlier in class.
I find that everybody want to see the other person succeed, and that is something wonderful. Some of the students have little competition among themselves and thats good because they push each other to do better.
I am looking forward to my second semester but I am also looking for a job and combine both of them. I hope my second semester is as good as my first and better, may the professor even be the same and better.

STUDY AND NOTE TAKING #7

School is like work you got to get there on time study and take notes. School even got deadlines too, school can be fun once you got a system especially when it come to studying.
For me I can study with the radio or tv on or with my son playing his games or making noise. Some people can study only when its quite. Good studying begin with good note taking if you are going to school or college. Do not follow my study habits.
When you decide to study find yourself a nice quite well lit place where you can sit.
Never study lying down on your bed or your bedroom because you will fall asleep. Why a quite place because less distraction for you so a library or the study lab will do.
At times I study aloud, meaning I got to read my notes a loud. Make sure you study on a full stomach, because if you study on an empty stomach that is a distraction.
Set a purpose that will help you study, ask yourself question about the topic you about to study and try and find the answer while studying also take notes.
Take an active role in your study at times we all find yourself not concentrating. We would read the same sentence or chapter over and over, one way to make sure that this don't happen take notes while reading because sometimes in your own hand writing that help you a lot because it is your note.
We are creature of habits so study in the same place and the same time. That means we all have a favorite place that we go and sit to clear our mind or go and thing about things when we are in trouble, used that place because you will not be distracted.
Have a set,start and end time because sometimes we find yourself studying every day nothing get accomplish because we try to cram so much that it cancel out when test time.
Set a time when you going to study if you find that the evening work for you set two hours aside, if morning is good for you set a side two hours and always keep the same time.

TAKE NOTE
Note taking is important in college life, but if you are not in class then you are in trouble. Always be on time for your classes and be prepared.Sitting in front or in the back doesn't matter to if you want to learn its all about the individual.
Always be prepared to take notes once you are in your classroom so have your notebook, pen and a clean sheets of paper ready to go. If you are using your laptop to take notes make sure the battery is charged, turn on and ready to go.
Use a binder, I know it is bulky to carry around but it can be used over and over. Using binder make it easier to organize your notes, if the professor give handouts it is easy to put in your binder. If someone need to borrow your notes it is easier to lend them the sheet instead of the whole note book.
When taking notes make sure that you can read your own hand writing because you will used them to study from. No scribbling allowed, make sure your notes are neat.
Review your notes regularly. Always have a classmate phone number or email address so you can both compare notes or maybe you did not make it to class you got someone who can share the notes with you. Date your notes and highlight the important points this will help you a lot and it make looking for certain notes easier to find.

DATING WHILE IN COLLEGE. GOOD IDEA OR BAD IDEA? #6

Dating in college could be a good or bad it all depend on the individuals. If you take a survey a lot of college students past and present enjoy there college dating experience, some even end up marrying.

I am not saying that everyone is going to be that lucky, because sometimes things do turn out bad. Dating in college play by a different rules, meaning that the college campus might be big or small but you might run into each other if the relationship goes sour.

There are pros and cons in college dating:

PROS

College dating can be fun and also it is a supporting system, if you are away from home for the first time it can be lonely, you got to new make friends to do all kind of things such as going to the movie, studying and even doing your laundry. By have a girlfriend/boyfriend you got someone who got your back.

When it come studying you need help even though you might not like it but if you have some one pushing you that a good thing, because at times we might not want to do it.

We all need companionship and I do not mean just talking, because most of our sexual experience start in college.

Networking might not sound like it belong here but if you think about it we had a girlfriend/boyfriend who help us getting into a job or give us a lead to a job.

If you are lucky marriage is the prize with your college girlfriend/boyfriend.

CONS

If your dating experience turns bad you could end up with a stalker so we got to be careful who we date in college.

Sexual harassment/physical abuse like everything some time our feelings get hurt and in turn we want that person to feel the same pain, so we turn to violence and since we are in college that a dangerous combination.

Couple months ago there was a murder on a college campus, a girlfriend/boyfriend relationship went bad and this is the worse that can happen.

My advice to anyone who want to date in college, try and date someone not in your class because being around each other can wear thin at times. Remember the old saying 'Buyer be wear' keep that in mind when dating because, the same thing that bring a smile on your face or the nice feeling like you walking on cloud 9 can bring a frown or a rain cloud in your life.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS #4

The INTERNET is just like everything in life it got its good,happy,sad,funny, and outrageous and can also calm your soul.
The INTERNET can be use for anything you want it to be used for, since I am between jobs I use it to assist me in my job search. It can even teach you the basics of anything you can imagine.
As for myself I would not put anything that will hinder me in the future online, because once its out there it takes on a life of its own. But you got to look at the time we are living in, everybody want the spotlight on them and try to be the most outraeous one, and all this is for attention.
To me I enjoy the INTERNET, especially now since that I am back in school. I rember about 30 years ago when you had a school project you had to go to the library and use the encyclopedia to do your research, now you can do that from the comfort of your home.

The social network sites are good if it is used in the right way. I personally enjoy Facebook, because it let me stay in contact with family,friends and old classmates all over the world.

The INTERNET comes with a warning to parents, be a parent and watch or monitor what your child is doing online. The INTERNET make it easy for anyone to get into trouble, so you know the temptation for a child is great so PLEASE PROTECT YOUR CHILD and I do not mean hide the INTERNET but pay attention to what he/her she is doing online.

DEFINE THE CREATIVE YOU #3

The reason why I chose Ditital Media Arts, because I was in printing industry. I was always intrested in working in the Graphic Arts Department. I do not know if it was sitting there with the computers or because it was another challenge. I enjoy a challenge. The company that I used to work for we had a lot of accounts for the Advertising Industry and knowing what new product they would be pushing was fun because I could talk about it to my friends before the product come out.

The creative side of me is loving to see and idea come to life. You know when You did a good job when the customer or client have a big smile on his face and cannot stop saying 'Thank You'. Going into the Graphic Arts Department I would stayed there for a while, just to watch the process from instruction to design before it gets to me in the printing department.

When I started in the Printing Industry in the 1980's technology was not like this so everything took a while to finish. Now everything is at a fast pace, email is faster than snail mail or fax.

I hope to learn a new trade that going to help me in the future, because everything is changing at a rapid pace. Technology wise it help keep me up with the changing of time, I can also start my own business or go work in the Advertising Industry.

In 5 years I can see myself in my own business in Las Vegas, if you are wondering why Las Vegas they deal with a lot of advertising due to the fact of conventions, sports(boxing),hotels and a party city and the average over one million visitor a year.

MY RETURN TO SCHOOL #1

WOW where do I start, I made that phone call to TCI. You kept on hearing go back to school boy and I did was it an awakening for me.The last time I been to school was 1980. Back in those days things seems a lot simpler. Being from another country we learn not to take things for granted.

When I came to TCI it was a lot of paper work that almost discourage me but I made a promise with myself that I was going to give it a try. Since I did my schooling outside of the United States I had to get transcript and things, also being out of work play on your mind because when you are responsible for the well being of your son You know You got to do something.

My family had to make a lot of adjustments, my son attend school on the East side and I attend school on the West side and his mother work at night and attend Hunter College.My son is 7 years old. When its my turn to take him to school in the morning we go to bed by 8pm to get up by 6am to leave the house by 6:45am to get him to school by 8am and for me to be on my way to my classes.

My first week was so different because what I saw in classes open my eyes because my young classmate were ahead of me when it come to computer but I am catching up and understand a little more about DMA(Digital Media Arts). For me to catch up I had to do alot of work by that mean reading the text books and my notes.

I feel that being a little older than my classmates and a family man I take things more seriously because I got people who is depending on me. I find that everybody in my DMA class got a goal that they want to do their own business and thats an eye opening for me also because back in the days they taught us about going to school and then get a job when you are finish with your schooling.

The structure of the classes are different and the pace at which everything moves. I try and keep my syllabus near by because I find that to be my road map for my school year. The syllabus is my best friend because it gives you everything you need to be ready for exams and classes.

To anyone who is planning to attend TCI gollege I say "GO FOR IT" the financial aid office could make you question yourself but you got to look at the big picture. My experience with the financial aid office almost let me quit because they need all kind of paper some I had the other I got to get but it was ok. Once in college I recommend that you try to know where your classes are because some maybe in the main building and the other will be at the annex, I would do a dry run if I got classes at any of the annex so I would know where and the shortest route to reach them. Make sure that you get your teachers name and contact information just in case something comes up and uyou cannot make the class. OH hey also try and get a classmate info too that can be helpful.

Make sure you keep a folder at home label `TCI` because any letter or other infromation you get you need to save until you finish school. They adavantage of all the faculty got to offer because remember you are paying for everything. Your teachers will point that out to you and do not be afraid to ask questions the only dumb question is the when that is not ask. Always KEEP YOUR TCI CATALOG just in case you got to drop out or family emergency you will know what u going to need to finish your course. Course catalog change just like everything else so get one when you register for your classes and save it until you finish your course.

To all incoming students please attend ALL CLASSES AND BE ON TIME, this is not high school this is college and it moves fast, if you miss 5 minutes thats a lot of info that pass you by.
